Born in Washington, D.C., Cuff(Cuthbert Russell Train)attended Cathedral schools there, graduated from St. Mark's in Southborough, MA and Princeton University where he majored in philosophy and won eight letters in squash and tennis.
The following three years, he attended The Episcopal Theological School,
and served in the Marine Corps Reserve, Parris Island and as seminarian
at the American Cathedral in Paris before taking an MA in political
philosophy at the New School.
In 1968, he married Barbara Kent Lawrence and began twelve years
teaching, she, history, sociology and anthropology, he, English.
In 1970, they had Michael Cuthbert Train; in 1973, Elizabeth Kent Train,
Harvard graduates.
In 1979, the Trains left suburbia to live year-round on Mount Desert
Island, summer retreats for both their families, starting Train
Properties, eventually a real estate development, construction and
brokerage firm Cuff sold in 2005. The Trains divorced in 1995.
The following year, Cuff met Anne Welles, a veteran teacher in Southwest Harbor, and they have been steadfast friends since. Anne has Laura and Will, grown twins.
In 2002, Anne obtained her real estate license, working part-time at
Train Properties, work she continues with Cuff at Margo Stanley Real
Estate.
